I have a friend who shifted the trajectory of my life with just 1 conversation. We were standing in her kitchen when she asked me about my plans to pursue music. She was my voice teacher at the time and had helped me discover my love of the arts. So when I told her that I had no plans to pursue anything in the arts and, rather, go to work for my dad’s senior living business, I’d never felt the disappointment of someone I loved so heavily. I told her that I loved the music and the arts but I had no intention of living my life paycheck to paycheck which was a stance I’d picked up from my dad and parroted when anyone questioned my life decisions. I cried when I drove home from her house that night. I knew I was lying to her and to myself.
